If pruning is necessary, prune during the dormant season and avoid pruning in spring when the sap is running. Spray the tree with fungicide if a disease occurs. Fertilize maple 1-2 times a year with a multi-purpose fertilizer. Water when the soil is 1.5 inches dry from the top. Allow 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Mulch the surface around the trunk with 1-2 inches of compost. Low maintenance, this plant needs little pruning. Plant Tamukeyama in easy-draining, light soil with a pH of 5.7-7.0.If you are planting into clay soil, apply gypsum to the soil before planting to help improve drainage. Perfect as a specimen plant in cottage gardens, city gardens, or rock gardens. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and plant out.Leaf scorch can be caused by a lack of soil moisture or excessive exposure. Best leaf color in partial shade, although full sun can be tolerated. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. A full sun or part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, organically rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soils.It is an old cultivar, dating back to 1710. This charming Japanese Maple makes a wonderful specimen plant and is a great choice for the patio. While attractive close-up, the flowers are however not particularly showy from a distance. In spring, this Japanese Maple produces small purple-red flowers that give way to greenish samaras, which ripen in late summer to early fall. In the fall, the leaves turn bright scarlet before shedding to the ground.
